MANITOUWADGE, ON – Saturday, February 9th the moment ski and snowboarding enthusiasts in Manitouwadge had been waiting for since December finally came, Kiwissa Ski Hill’s opening day for the 2012/13 season.

Though limited runs were accessible, just 2 of the 10 on the hill, these were reported to be in good condition and reduced lift tickets (just $10/person to use the t-bar) helped to make up for the limited access.  The beginner hill was also open and at just $5/person a great alternative for beginners or those looking to ‘play’ as there are a few rails/pipes accessible for all to use.

Kiwissa’s new Manager, Jason Louvelle, was pleased with how things had unfolded on the first day the hill was open since his becoming Manager at the beginning of the season.  Approximately 40 lift tickets were purchased Saturday, a decent number all things considered and most seemed to be pleased with the condition of the runs that were open.

The responsibility of managing the Blizzard Grill, which was handled by the township last year, has been passed over to the Kiwissa Ski Club.  President Lisa Schut worked diligently in the days preceding the opening to assist Volunteer Natalie Labbee  in preparing all that was needed to have the canteen, which offers hamburgers, hot dogs, and poutine in addition to other. typical, concession stand snacks and refreshments, ready to roll Saturday.

Labbee reiterated what seemed to be felt by all those involved in Opening Day, that things had unfolded smoothly and as expected.  She was assisted by MHS Student Courtney Magson on Saturday and Volunteer Cecile Kerster Sunday. The ladies kept skiers, snowboarders and their fans well fed throughout the weekend.

If you would like to be involved, there will still be volunteers needed if weather conditions allow the hill to remain open beyond this weekend. Those are interested should contact Schut or Labbee by phone or by messaging the Kiwissa Ski Club (CLICK HERE) on Facebook.
